The city of Rogersville is located in Hawkins County in the northeastern corner of the state of Tennessee. Settled in 1775 by Davy Crockett's grandparents, Rogersville was named after town founder, Joseph Rogers, an Irish immigrant who arrived in the area in 1775. Presently home to a population of approximately 4,300 people, Rogersville is Tennessee's second oldest city and the site of the state's oldest courthouse, first newspaper, and first post office. Known for its large collection of Federal style architecture and red brick buildings, the town and many of its historic buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Rogersville's historic Main Street boasts the state's largest collection of red brick, Federal style architecture. The Hawkins County Courthouse, located on Main Street and built in 1836, is the state's oldest actively working courthouse. Also on Main Street is the Hale Springs Inn, circa 1824, whose distinguished guests from the past include Presidents Andrew Jackson, James Polk, and Andrew Johnson. After extensive restoration in 2009, the inn is open for business and features nine spacious guest rooms, an excellent restaurant, and McKinney's Tavern.
It's community spirit and historic pride are showcased through the numerous festivals and fairs hosted by the city each year. The annual Heritage Days Festival is a celebration of the city's unique heritage and features storytelling, Appalachian music, arts and crafts, and special events related to the history of the area. Other prominent festivals include the annual Shakespeare and Friends Renaissance Faire, which features Celtic music, belly dancing, puppetry, fire breathing, and comedy shows, and the Cruise-In on the Square, a classic car show featuring pre-1980 restored classics, along with live music and local entertainment on the town square.
Rogersville's active citizens, dedicated leaders, and community spirit, together with its pleasant seasonal climate and proximity to East Tennessee's vast natural resources of lakes, forests, and wilderness areas makes it a great place to live, visit, and enjoy the pleasures of the area!
